Today I’m grateful for the little things and simple no fuss meal options like Birds Eye Chef’s Favorites. I’ve been a part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program since last year and finally got a chance to sample and review something. This couldn’t have come at a better time.
Last week, I threw out my back. The severity of the injury left me a hostage to my bed and with low mobility. It was impossible to cook anything or stand so finding this box of wonderful goodies at my door step was just perfect. Unfortunately, the products inside had completely thawed out. The dry ice didn’t hold up during shipping even overnight. I noticed that the package instructions state “do not thaw” so I wonder if that affected the taste and quality but despite that small issue I was pleased with the overall taste of these meals which I ate without preparing a main course.
The Birds Eye Chef’s Favorites meals contain no preservatives and can be cooked over the stove or for about 6 minutes in the microwave. I received four samples: primavera vegatable risotto, creamed spinach, mushroom and green bean risotto, and roasted red potatoes and green beans. The meals cook in the bag. There are no pots and pans to wash just your serving dishes. I’m not a big fan of microwaving anything or frozen meals however this convenience was just what I needed.
My favorite Birds Eye Chef’s Favorites meal was the Primavera Vegetable Risotto. I love risotto and this was a wonderful creamy dish with a good blend of garden vegetables. I added a few spices to jazz things up a bit but overall the consistency and flavors were great. I expected the rice to turn to mush in the microwave however everything surprisingly held up. This dish is lightly sauced with a Parmesan sauce that didn’t run and create a mess. The creamed spinach was my second favorite. There is a mellow garlic flavor and oddly enough I ate this with a grilled cheese sandwich. It made for a good dip and tasted fresh. I couldn’t get into the other two but luckily there are plenty of other flavors to choose from when the chef’s favorites meals hit grocery stores in September. I understand that there’s nothing like a home cooked meal however when you’re in a bind (or injured like I was), these meals can be a lifesaver or an addition to a main dish.
Disclosure: I received the Birds Eye Chef’s Favorite sample pack as part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program. All product opinions expressed are my own.
