This was the chowdown I was meant for. However three weeks ago, due to a technical snafu, I got paired up with some hot dogs instead so I was delighted when the fair invited me back to judge deep fried desserts.
For this chowdown, the fair favorite Chicken Charlie’s prepared their deep fried Klondike bar drizzled with chocolate sauce and powdered sugar. The OC Food Truck prepared a deep fried Twinkie garnished with whipped cream, Nutella, and a raspberry compote sauce. The deep fried Klondike is an overwhelming dessert. It is batter heavy yet the sweet creamy surprise is delightful and chilling. However it was no match to the deep fried flavor profiles of the Twinkie. Paired perfectly with whipped cream, Nutella, and raspberry – the judges and I were in awe and a winner was declared.
This year, the food trucks have had success vs the fair favorites with the exception of Tornado Potato’s defeat to Tasti Chips. Given their reputation for gourmet food on wheels, it’s not hard to see why they won a majority of the chowdowns.
The fair concluded Sunday night so if you missed your chance at some fried goodness, save your appetite for next year where a new fried food will be revealed. I overheard Chicken Charlie mentioning something about a fried salad. I’m curious and wondering how that will taste. Unfortunately, I’ll have to wait a year. 🙁
