I’ll have to admit that I was confused when I first heard of Burrissimo. My friends were raving about pasta, veggies, and meat stuffed inside a burrito. I could have sworn they had gone mad. How does one combine burritos and pasta and what is that even like?
Last week, I had an opportunity to check it out for myself. A Burrissimo is exactly as described – angel hair pasta, fresh veggies, grilled meat, and your choice of sauce inside of an herb flat bread. It’s lovingly dubbed the Italian Chipotle but dare I say, it’s actually better and with more options – fresher, better options than the tired fare at the Mexican chain.
The concept is similar: get in line and pick what you want: burrissimo (described above), pasta bowl, or a salad bowl. If you’re a first timer, I suggest the Burrissimo. The friendly staff will explain it all to you and even be patient as you make your choice. The Burrissimo flat bread is lightly brushed with olive oil which gives it a nice flavor and polish. I got mine with alfredo sauce but you can also choose from pomodoro and diavolo (spicy red sauce). Then, I topped it off with grilled zucchini and mushrooms, even more mushrooms, Italian corn, mozzarella, bruschetta, and cucumbers. While waiting for my burrito to be wrapped up, I spied pepperoni rolls on the menu and got an order of those too. Mmm.
The Costa Mesa location has ample space – with booths and tables. My friend and I found a booth and decided to get the Italian soda vs the regular soda. Might as well go along with the Italian theme right? We had a choice of grape, pomegranate, and strawberry creme. All were delicious but slightly sweet.
The Burrissimo itself was a huge undertaking. If you’re dining here, I suggest you come hungry, skip breakfast and lunch because this itself will fill you up for the day. I was surprised by how well the concept of pasta inside of a burrito worked. The angel hair pasta was perfectly cooked, the sauce was light, and the veggies were extremely fresh. I was “ohing and ahing” after each bite and took half of it home for lunch the next day.
