There are only a few reasons I venture out to LA – good eats, friends, and fun events. Other than that, the idea of anything else related to LA terrifies me including the traffic and the maze you happen to get stuck in while navigating. This particular time I was tempted to leave the confines and the security blanket provided by the Orange Curtain for a Yelp event and some exclusive swag – Yelp sunglasses.
Driving up into the industrial sector of LA located minutes away from downtown, I must admit I was a little frightened. Thoughts of being mugged or kidnapped raced through my head and I quickly parked and made my way inside. I can be such a wimp sometimes. This wine bar is simply marked by small round sign with a black wine bottle and inside you’ll find the wall surrounded by big screen TVs, enomatic wine machines, wine bottles, stark white walls, and tall metal tables with stools. The environment is chill and comforting. It’s a small wine bar but the open kitchen is a great element; you can either watch the screen or your meal being prepared.
For our event, Swill Automatic closed for a few hours to accommodate us and tuned the TV to the Oscars. For the occasion, the staff prepared potstickers and two amazing drinks – a sangria and the refreshingly smooth terremoto (sherbet and sparkling chardonnay). As the night wound down, I decided to sample their full menu and ordered the tortellini gigante. The tortellinis are stuffed with spinach and cheese and topped with a garlic cream sauce and basil. The dish is made and prepared fresh in the kitchen. The final dish consists of 5-6 raviolis and is an overall well balanced proportional meal unlike a bowl of pasta served at other Italian restaurants that might leave you feeling overwhelmed, stuffed, and with a slight tummy ache. The concept here is to appeal to the senses, the mood, and provide you with quality eats. For dessert, there is an offer on Yelp to receive 2 free cookies with check-in. The cookies that night were chocolate chip. While I appreciated another home cooked feature, the cookies were not a highlight unlike the meal.
Swill Automatic, I must admit I just might brave another trip to LA to eat here again and take advantage of your wine bar.
