Great Balls on Tires in L.A.

17 July, 2011 By Sukhraj Beasla (Suki) 1 Comment

Great Balls on Tires was sort of the lone truck at Munchathon this weekend.  They sat nestled in the back occupying a small space in the shade. At the Yelp tent, I occasionally looked over to see what was happening. They had a sizable line. People were digging these balls and I would see them pass by with their various selections. One runner from the Yelp OC team finally went over and tried the truck. I watched as she devoured mouthful after mouthful of her Buffalo Balls with Mac n Cheese and proudly proclaimed between bites that they were the “best I’ve ever had.” Oh really?

This red, white, and black truck is curious. They have no shame. It’s loud and proud. They boast about being L.A’s greatest balls. Well well! The menu offers are fabulous. Starting at $6, you have a variety of balls to choose from. I was curious about the “Ballywood” balls but considering it was summer and slightly hot at the park and that I’m of Indian descent. I decided to table that option for another day. I was craving Mac n Cheese and would love to have somehow combined the Ballywood with the Buffalo Ball but decided to just try the Buffalo Ball.

The Buffalo Ball is a pairing of 2 chicken meatballs doused with buffalo sauce and served with a side of Mac n Cheese. The Mac n Cheese is topped with bread crumbs and garnish of blue cheese dressing. Absolutely mouthwatering. I was silent for 10 minutes as I ate my balls. 🙂 Yes, I meant to say that.

The buffalo sauce is tangy and slightly spicy. The blue cheese pairs well with the Mac n Cheese. While it is a bit mushy, I did enjoy the bread crumb Mac n Cheese. Overall, fabulous winning combinations. I will have to track this truck down in L.A. to try their Ballywood balls and ultimately the whole menu.

Hi! I'm Suki and I love food, the emotions it inspires and how it brings a passionate group of people to the table to share stories. Some of my best memories come from sharing my favorite recipes, having an amazing meal at a restaurant and being in the kitchen with my Mom or Grandmother learning about a dish they just cooked so it’s only natural that I’d want to share my love for food in the form of a blog.
