It’s Summer and time for the OC Fair. Confession: I’ve only been to the fair twice since I’ve lived in the area. Pretty sad I know but I love that the energy awakens my inner child. The year, the fair is hosting a new event called Chowdown which is similar to Bobby Flay’s Throwdown on the Food Network channel. I was asked to participate as a judge and had my heart set on trying some deep fried desserts (the originally scheduled program) however there was a last minute issue. To my surprise, it was Pinks vs. The Greasy Wiener – two LA favorites I had yet to try and as for hot dogs I couldn’t even remember the last time I had one. Reminder: I’ve been a vegetarian for a long time. Meat has been a foreign object to me until this year.
Eating these hot dogs was no small feat. Pinks of Hollywood prepared their bacon chili cheese dog while the Greasy Wiener made their “Bomb” which is a bacon wrapped dog with mustard, chili and cheese topped with a dill pickle spear. The winner for taste, presentation, and originality was the hot dog prepared by the Greasy Wiener even though Pinks was a strong competitor. This is the second time that a truck has beat a fair favorite and this was no small defeat to an old
standby like Pinks which says a lot for the Greasy Wiener. Fun fact: the winning hot dog was named by customers who declared it was “the bomb” when they tasted it.
The OC Fair runs until August 14th and there are two more chowdowns on the schedule: Fried Potatoes (Tasti Chips vs Tornado Potato) on August 4th and the Bacon Chowdown (Chocolate covered bacon vs the Baconmania truck) on August 11th.
This year, the fair is also featuring fried Kool-aid. My first impression was not favorable. I wasn’t quite sure how they could fry Kool-aid but if you stop by Chicken Charlies make sure you try some. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked these. They taste nothing like Kool-aid and are more like a fried donut. The fair also features fun attractions like the Ice Museum, cooking demos, photo exhibits, farm animals, and rides. There’s something for everyone at the OC Fair.
