Subway has been a bit adventurous lately with their sandwiches. Perhaps, they got bored with their menu. Who knows? Lately they’ve introduced avocados (something the CA market is already used to), the pulled pork sandwich, and recently the oven crisp chicken. This last one baffles me. How can it possibly be “oven crisp?”
Here’s how Subway describes their new creation: experience the breakthrough taste of the NEW Oven Crisp Chicken for some deep flavor without the deep fryer. It’s NEVER fried, NEVER greasy and ALWAYS tasty. As a 6-inch sub, it’s a delicious part of a SUBWAY FRESH FIT® meal. Try one today, because grease is out. Fresh taste is in.
Recently, Klout has been sending me $10 gift cards to try Subway’s latest zany creations so I headed up the street to give it a shot. I ordered a foot long on their Italian herb and cheese bread with pepper jack cheese, honey mustard, avocados, tomatoes, lettuce, and salt and pepper to taste. The sandwich artist unwrapped a breaded chicken pattie and tossed it into their toaster oven for 30 seconds. It was late at night and the store was quiet s0 I waited to hear a “crisp.” This is “oven crisp” chicken, right? Not lukewarm microwave type chicken? Sadly not the case. She took it out after 30 seconds, laid it on my sandwich, closed it up and rang up my order.
On the drive home (a mere 2 minutes), I wondered if I should have eaten this at the store and how the sandwich would look once I opened it up. It was only heated for 30 seconds. How long could it stay warm? Plus that warm chicken was laid on top of cold ingredients then immediately wrapped up. What will that sandwich look like? How will it taste? Lots of questions for a simple sandwich.
The lukewarm chicken pattie turned my sandwich to mush. I got through about half of a six inch before I pulled out the pattie to inspect it. It’s lightly breaded but not really seasoned and NOT crisp. I tossed it out and ate the rest of the sandwich. Later that night, I had a horrible stomachache. Don’t know if it was related to the chicken sandwich but the next morning, I did enjoy the raspberry cheesecake cookie I picked up. If anything, Subway has some great cookies and other wonderful sandwiches.
