It was an unusually warm day in January (I suppose that’s average for SoCal) that I found myself in the Albertson’s parking lot in Tustin awaiting to meet Bob Brown (chef/owner) of the Spudrunners truck.
Upon boarding the truck, I was impressed by the careful precision, craft, and mastery that goes into the comfort food that Bob and his team prepare for the eager folks in line. Every dish oozes with pride and I watched, mouth watering, as Bob began telling me his story of a truck inspired by a single vegetable: the potato. If you follow my food adventures, you know what a fry addict I am. Fries have helped get over heart break, trauma, and many any other unfortunate events. Bob’s fresh hand cut, fried to a golden crisp, fries hit my comfort zone. Paired with their amazing sauces (of which there is quite a selection), I was in fry heaven.
But the fries aren’t the only star here. Hot of their grill, Spudrunners prepares a sandwich that rivals most others. What I love most about the Spudrunner sandwiches is the consistent crunch, the combination of flavors, and the juicy meat. The simple menu gives new meaning to “grilled cheese” and goes above and beyond. I opted for the Chipotle Chicken – grilled lime cilantro chicken, cheddar cheese, red onion, tomato, fire roasted green chili and chipotle ranch on sourdough. This southwest delicacy has a smoky, melt in your mouth, velvety texture. The chicken was seasoned and cooked perfectly. My only complaint was not having enough napkins; I would have happily licked my fingers if I wasn’t pretending to be so lady-like but otherwise my tastebuds were dancing merrily while I sipped on fresh squeezed lemonade (not too sweet and not too sour). Perhaps, the best damn lemonade I’ve ever had. Pardon my French.
Rumor has it, there will be a 2nd truck soon. Very soon. If you’re an active Foursquare user, Spudrunners will happily reward on your first checkin with some of their amazing fries (with purchase) and a free lemonade on your 5th checkin. While you’re in line, don’t forget to grab a loyalty card – 5 stamps gets you a lemonade and your 10th stamp gets you an entree.
