I bet you’d never guess, just by looking at me, that I once grew up on a farm. I’ve been living in SoCal for 15 years and even I find it hard to believe sometimes but at that time, I just wanted to escape and didn’t really understand or appreciate the “farm to table” concept and how great it was grow your own produce, put in that hard work and effort, and grow and eat organic produce free of pesticides and GMO’s.
Imagine my surprise, when I found out, that I could have that same farm experience here in SoCal where I’m surrounded by freeways and industrial buildings. Winder Farms calls themselves the “farmer’s market on wheels” and they truly are. What started off as a simple dairy service (remember those glass milk bottles?) quickly grew into more than that and now they serve fresh farm goodness (Tanaka Farms in Irvine) that arrives at your doorstep at the crack of dawn. I was given the opportunity to sample this “farm to door” concept and was delighted to receive a box full of Tanaka Farms produce ranging from bright juicy oranges, tangy radishes, kale, spinach, fresh basil, and lots more! In addition to the produce, I got FOUR bags of other goodies in stay fresh freezer bags. These bags were full of jumbo eggs, chocolate milk, regular milk, orange juice, ravioli, applewood smoked bacon, and grass fed New York strip steak. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many groceries in my life and being a solo party of one, I stocked up my fridge and started making meal plans.
Here’s what I came up with:
- Scrambled and soft boiled eggs with a side of bacon every morning and sometimes for a late night indulgence. The bacon is nice and thick and although I usually eat two medium eggs, two jumbo eggs kept me quite full for a while. They also tasted amazingly fresh and cooked up beautifully.
- For a Sunday brunch, I prepared the New York steak with the ravioli. The steak is juicy and needed only a mild rub for seasoning.
- I took some of the produce to work with me and divided it amongst co-workers. I enjoyed the basil with my eggs and made a fruit salad with the lettuce. The radishes I kept for myself as a snack while enjoying my favorite shows.
- The chocolate milk was my vice. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted anything so divine and creamy. I poured a glass and realized the consistency was equivalent to a milkshake or a smoothie.
