When I first heard the name “Dude, Where’s my Curry?,” I thought to myself, “It’s probably run by a hip group of Indians” and I was somewhat right. This colorful Indian restaurant, located in the beautiful community of Foothill Ranch is run by Rohit Walia and he’s about as hip as they come.
What you’ll notice upon entering is the bright, colorful interior and a friendly greeting from Rohit himself. Why does this matter? Because most Indian restaurants in the area (bless their hearts) are run in a particular fashion – somewhat fancy decor with some contraband from India, white linen tablecloths, and a stuffy Indian uncle judging you by your order and the way you dress. Don’t lie, you feel it too, especially if you’re an Indian like me. However, Rohit and I hit it off from the word “Hello” and I was pretty honest with him about my views – as was he. That’s how I knew this would be the start of a beautiful evening with food that would be sure to please my distinctive palate.
At Dude, Where’s my Curry, everyone is welcome to try Indian food without any judgments. That’s also important. Indian food, with its bright colors and aromas, can be quite a turn off if you’re not used to it or didn’t grow up with it sticking to the fabrics of your clothing. A greeting from Rohit and a warm welcome from the staff will help guide you into this foreign journey that is Indian food. So if you’re looking to make your introduction to Indian food, this is it.
To help ease your way in, Dude, Where’s My Curry does an excellent job at this. Unlike any other Indian restaurant in the area, you can sample before you buy. The staff is more than willing to wait patiently as you sample your way from Aloo gobi, chicken bhuna (my personal favorite), or anything else your heart might desire. Why is that? Because Rohit feels you should love what you’re about to taste and if you taking the chance to enter, he wants you to make sure you made the right choice.
Once you’ve decided on what you like, the fun begins! There are three different meal deals to complete your foray into Indian food.
Each comes with rice and naan prepared in a clay oven right before you (this is about as authentic as it get folks – if you see a clay oven, it’s game on!).
To add an extra kick to your meal, you can go with mild, medium, or hot curry selections to kick things up a notch and then maybe cool things down with a rosewater mango lassi (another personal favorite) and end the night with a dessert. Rohit and his father have come together to prepare the most amazing flavors of ice cream ranging from cardamon, pistachio, and mango. All of the ice creams are all nature, made fresh, with no artificial ingredients.
Another fun fact about Dude, Where’s My Curry is that you won’t get the overwhelming full feeling you would at other Indian restaurants. All dishes are prepared without any oil and butter and some are even gluten free so if you’re on the healthy side of things, Dude, Where’s My Curry is the perfect place to go. And did you know that Rohit’s father is a Guiness Book Record holder for preparing the most Indian food? You can only imagine that some of that culinary genius has been passed down to Rohit himself especially in that chicken bhuna. So what are you waiting for? Dude, Where’s my Curry has a dish waiting just for you and don’t forget to say hi to Rohit!
